About Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve

The Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve covers over 4,000 square kilometers of diverse boreal ecosystems located in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec. Characterized by dense coniferous and mixed forests, numerous lakes and rivers, and rugged hills, the reserve provides important habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including moose, black bears, wolves, lynx, and freshwater fish species such as brook trout and northern pike. Established in 1948, this reserve serves both conservation and sustainable resource use purposes, supporting outdoor recreation and controlled hunting and fishing activities. Visitors can explore extensive networks of trails and navigable waterways suited for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and snowmobiling in the winter months. The reserve also features campsites and rustic cabins, allowing immersive overnight experiences deep in nature. The Ashuapmushuan River and several smaller tributaries cut through the reserve, providing scenic vistas and fishing hotspots. The area's relatively remote location ensures a peaceful wilderness experience with opportunities for wildlife viewing and nature photography. Accessibility is mainly via forest roads from nearby towns such as Saint-Félicien and Chibougamau. As one of Quebec's largest wildlife reserves, Ashuapmushuan plays a critical role in regional biodiversity conservation and outdoor recreation, attracting nature enthusiasts interested in experiencing the province's boreal wilderness at close range.
